The Metaverse Is an Underwhelming Mess…How Do We Fix It?

TL;DR

  • Most metaverse platforms are straight up ghost towns, because there’s very little to do/play/explore. So what’s the fix? Software Development Kits (or ‘SDKs’).

  • Basically, SDKs are to software, what Photoshop is to images – an interface of tools that let users build and create.

  • The wealth of ‘stuff to do’ and ‘content to consume’ in the metaverse will be built largely by users and third party developers.

  • And easy-to-use SDKs (like MSquared) are exactly what is needed to push the ‘content snowball’ down the hill.

Full Story

The metaverse has a problem…

It’s underwhelming as all hell.

Most metaverse platforms are straight up ghost towns, because there’s very little to do/play/explore.

So what’s the fix?

Three little words: Software. Development. Kits. (or ‘SDKs’)

Basically, SDKs are to software, what Photoshop is to images – an interface of tools that let users build and create.

And the team at Improbable have just released a metaverse SDK called ‘MSquared,’ that early users are praising for its ease-of-use.

Ok, but why is this important?

Right now, multiple companies are working to figure out how to allow thousands of players to explore shared virtual worlds, in real-time, without everything breaking.

Once that baseline is achieved, the next (and tallest) hurdle to jump is figuring out what the hell to do with it all.

(What games/experiences/environments will people want to explore in the metaverse?)

Now, here’s the twist: it won’t be up to these companies to make compelling apps and content, but users and third party developers.

We saw the same thing play out with the iPhone.

It was a slick piece of tech, which appealed to early adopters…but was initially seen as un-needed and overpriced by most consumers.

That changed as early iPhone users turned creators, and built apps like Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Spotify, Uber, etc.

And the more iPhone specific apps/content/services there were, the more compelling the device became…until we all had one in our pocket.

This is why software tools like MSquared get us all giddy:

Just like with the iPhone, this wealth of ‘stuff to do’ and ‘content to consume’ in the metaverse will be built largely by users and third party developers.

And easy-to-use SDKs (like MSquared) are exactly what is needed to push the ‘content snowball’ down the hill.
