Best Cryptocurrencies to Buy in August 2026

July 21, 2026No Comments13 Mins Read

Choosing what to buy before a new month can feel like guesswork. Prices move faster than most research, promising catalysts get delayed, and a strong narrative can hide weak tokenomics.

This August watchlist narrows the market to eight established and higher-risk cryptocurrencies with measurable liquidity, usage, upcoming developments, or technical setups worth monitoring.

We ranked the assets using seven weighted factors rather than relying on price momentum or social-media attention alone. The list covers core market leaders, established decentralized finance infrastructure, and more speculative themes such as asset tokenization and decentralized AI.

Factor What We Evaluated
Liquidity Trading volume, market depth, exchange access, and expected slippage
Fundamentals Network usage, total value locked, fees, revenue, integrations, and developer activity
August catalysts Confirmed events, expected upgrades, macro releases, and adoption pipelines
Tokenomics Circulating supply, maximum supply, emissions, burns, buybacks, and unlocks
Valuation Market capitalization, fully diluted valuation, and comparison with measurable protocol activity
Momentum Trend structure, relative strength, support, resistance, and volume behavior
Risk Volatility, dilution, regulation, security, governance, and concentration

Market conditions remain selective rather than broadly bullish. Bitcoin still represents more than half of total crypto market capitalization, while stablecoin supply and institutional fund flows remain important indicators of available risk appetite. That favors liquid leaders and protocols with demonstrable use over thinly traded tokens supported only by a narrative.

Disclaimer: Market and protocol data for this article were assembled on July 21, 2026. Prices, metrics, and technical levels can change quickly. The ranking is a research-priority list, not a model portfolio or a guarantee that the assets will rise in August. This article is not personalized financial advice. Crypto assets are highly volatile, and you can lose most or all of your capital.

1. Bitcoin

Bitcoin (BTC) is the largest and most liquid cryptocurrency. Its fixed supply, institutional access, deep derivatives markets, and role as the market’s main benchmark make it the most defensive crypto-relative choice on this list, although BTC can still experience severe drawdowns.

Why We Picked It for August

Bitcoin remains the asset most likely to set the direction for the rest of the market. Its maximum supply is capped at 21 million BTC, and post-halving block issuance is approximately 450 BTC per day. Spot ETFs, institutional custody, CME markets, and corporate treasury holdings also give BTC broader market access than any other digital asset.

August’s main catalysts are macroeconomic rather than protocol-specific. US employment data, inflation releases, Federal Reserve communications, and the Jackson Hole symposium can change expectations for interest rates and risk assets. ETF flows will also matter. Renewed inflows and improving stablecoin liquidity would support the bull case, while sustained redemptions or tighter financial conditions could pressure BTC.

Technical Analysis

BTC is trading near $65,100 after a short-term relief rally. The market structure remains broadly range-bound rather than decisively bullish.

  • Support zones: $62,000, $60,000, and $58,500
  • Resistance zones: $65,200 and $70,000
  • Bullish confirmation: Sustained acceptance above $65,000–$70,000 with stronger volume
  • Thesis risk: A sustained break below $58,000–$58,500, especially alongside ETF outflows

These levels should be recalculated before making any decision because liquidation cascades can invalidate technical zones quickly.

Predicted Price for August

BTC has the strongest liquidity and market access in the group, but its August performance will depend heavily on macro conditions and institutional flows.

  • Base-case range: $60,000–$70,000
  • Bullish scenario: $70,000–$76,000
  • Bearish scenario: $52,000–$58,000

2. Ethereum

Ethereum (ETH) is the leading smart-contract settlement network for decentralized finance, stablecoins, tokenized assets, staking, and Layer 2 systems. Its move to proof-of-stake reduced energy use and introduced staking-based issuance, while transaction fees can burn ETH and offset part of that new supply.

Why We Picked It for August

Ethereum retains the largest DeFi economy and stablecoin base among smart-contract platforms. The network holds roughly $41.4 billion in DeFi TVL and around $150 billion in stablecoins, providing stronger evidence of economic use than most competing Layer 1 networks.

Pectra activated on Ethereum mainnet on May 7, 2025, and Fusaka followed in December 2025. For August 2026, the most relevant variables are ETF flows, staking demand, ETH/BTC relative strength, network fees, and development progress toward future upgrades. No confirmed August mainnet date has been announced for Glamsterdam.

Ethereum’s main valuation question is whether growth across Layer 2 networks creates enough settlement and data demand for ETH to offset lower mainnet fees and potential value leakage.

Technical Analysis

ETH is trading near $1,900 and shows stronger short-term momentum than Bitcoin. A sustained move above $2,000 would improve the structure, while a loss of the lower support area would weaken the recovery.

  • Support zones: $1,780, $1,700, and $1,570
  • Resistance zones: $1,900, $2,000, and $2,200
  • Bullish confirmation: Strong closes above $2,000 with improving ETH/BTC performance
  • Thesis risk: A sustained close below $1,570

Predicted Price for August

Ethereum offers broader application exposure than Bitcoin, but it also carries greater technical, competitive, staking, and regulatory complexity.

  • Base-case range: $1,700–$2,200
  • Bullish scenario: $2,200–$2,500
  • Bearish scenario: $1,400–$1,570

3. Aave

Aave (AAVE) is a non-custodial lending and borrowing protocol deployed across multiple blockchain networks. It has remained one of DeFi’s largest applications by TVL and has one of the clearer value-accrual mechanisms among governance tokens through protocol-funded AAVE buybacks.

Why We Picked It for August

Aave combines measurable adoption, relatively low remaining dilution, and continued V4 expansion. Protocol TVL remains around $14 billion, while more than 15.4 million of AAVE’s maximum supply of 16 million tokens is circulating.

Aave V4 activated on Ethereum mainnet on March 30, 2026, so the August thesis is continued adoption rather than an initial launch. Further cap increases, new markets and integrations, the Aave App, and cross-chain GHO development may expand usage during the month.

Aave’s stablecoin, GHO, adds another product layer, although its circulation and adoption remain smaller than those of the market’s leading stablecoins.

Technical Analysis

AAVE is trading near $89.50 after giving back part of its recent advance. The broader recovery remains relevant, but the token now needs to reclaim its former support area to restore stronger momentum.

  • Support zones: $88–$89 and $85
  • Resistance zones: $92–$95 and $101–$105
  • Bullish confirmation: A sustained move above $95, followed by a break above $105 with continued buybacks and borrowing growth
  • Thesis risk: A close below $85 or a material decline in protocol activity

Predicted Price for August

AAVE has stronger direct token value accrual than many DeFi assets, but smart-contract, oracle, governance, and bad-debt risks remain substantial.

  • Base-case range: $85–$105
  • Bullish scenario: $105–$125
  • Bearish scenario: $68–$82

4. Chainlink

Chainlink (LINK) provides oracle, proof-of-reserve, automation, and cross-chain infrastructure that lets blockchain smart contracts interact with external data and other networks. Its integrations span DeFi protocols, tokenization projects, and financial institutions.

Read more: What Is Chainlink? A Guide to the Oracle Network Powering Web3

Why We Picked It for August

Chainlink offers infrastructure exposure without depending on the success of one application or Layer 1 network. Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol adoption, real-world asset integrations, and institutional tokenization experiments remain the central thesis.

Chainlink reports more than $32 trillion in transaction value enabled across its infrastructure. That cumulative figure demonstrates the scale of its integrations, but it should not be interpreted as protocol revenue or value returned directly to LINK holders.

Tokenomics need close attention.

Approximately 748 million of LINK’s fixed maximum supply of one billion tokens is circulating, and Chainlink’s official supply information indicates an ongoing release schedule of roughly 7% of maximum supply per year. Service payments and staking create token demand, but value accrual remains more indirect than AAVE buybacks or HYPE fee burns.

Technical Analysis

LINK is trading near $8.50 after improving over the past week while maintaining a comparatively measured longer-term recovery.

  • Support zones: $7.90 and $7.20
  • Resistance zones: $8.50, $9.20, and $10
  • Bullish confirmation: Acceptance above $9.20 followed by a break above $10
  • Thesis risk: A close below $7

Predicted Price for August

LINK has strong infrastructure relevance, but supply releases, competing oracle systems, cross-chain security assumptions, and indirect token value capture limit the upside case.

  • Base-case range: $7.20–$9.20
  • Bullish scenario: $10–$12
  • Bearish scenario: $5.80–$7

5. Solana

Solana (SOL) is a high-throughput Layer 1 network used for payments, decentralized trading, consumer applications, DePIN, gaming, and tokenized assets. Its low transaction costs support high-frequency activity that may be impractical on more expensive networks.

Read more: What Is Solana and How Does It Work?

Why We Picked It for August

Solana holds roughly $5 billion in TVL and $15.2 billion in stablecoins, while daily DEX volume remains around $1.5 billion. Raw transaction counts need context because they can include voting, automated activity, and low-value transactions, but the network still shows meaningful application use.

The most specific August catalyst is AlpenSwitch, the transition mechanism for Solana’s Alpenglow consensus redesign. Solana’s July engineering update identified August 2026 as the expected mainnet window, although the schedule remains a target rather than a guaranteed launch date.

SOL also benefits from regulated investment-product access and strong on-chain liquidity. Its risks include ongoing inflation, validator and infrastructure concentration, upgrade instability, network reliability, and the variable quality of memecoin-driven activity.

Technical Analysis

SOL is trading near $77.40 after recovering from its recent lows but remaining in a sideways range.

  • Support zones: $74 and $70
  • Resistance zones: $80–$83 and $90
  • Bullish confirmation: A sustained move above $83, followed by acceptance above $90
  • Thesis risk: A close below $70 or instability during the expected upgrade window

Predicted Price for August

SOL has the clearest officially expected August network catalyst on the list, but delays or technical problems could quickly reverse the setup.

  • Base-case range: $70–$90
  • Bullish scenario: $90–$105
  • Bearish scenario: $55–$68

Learn more in our SOL price prediction.

6. Hyperliquid

Hyperliquid (HYPE) powers an on-chain order-book exchange, perpetual futures markets, spot trading, and an EVM environment on its own Layer 1 network. Its strong trading activity and direct fee-based token mechanism make it one of the most fundamentally measurable assets in the speculative group.

Read more: What Is Hyperliquid? DEX, L1, HYPE and Risks

Why We Picked It for August

Hyperliquid maintains roughly $10.8 billion in open interest and $5.7 billion in TVL, while annualized protocol revenue remains above $800 million. Trading fees are directed to community mechanisms, and the assistance fund automatically converts applicable fees into HYPE and burns the acquired tokens.

The main August event is also the section’s biggest risk. A projected contributor release of about 9.92 million HYPE was listed for August 6. The scheduled ceiling doesn’t necessarily equal the amount that will be claimed or sold, so on-chain claims and exchange deposits matter more than the headline number.

HYPE’s valuation remains demanding. Only a minority of its maximum supply is circulating, leaving a large gap between market capitalization and fully diluted valuation. Continued emissions and contributor supply could overwhelm buyback demand during weak market conditions.

Technical Analysis

HYPE is trading near $62 and remains within a highly volatile range below its all-time high. Its sharp price swings make these technical levels especially vulnerable to rapid invalidation.

  • Support zones: $60 and $58
  • Resistance zones: $65, $70, and $76.70
  • Bullish confirmation: A recovery above $65, followed by a break above $76.70 with continued revenue and limited unlock-related selling
  • Thesis risk: A close below $60, especially alongside large contributor deposits

Predicted Price for August

HYPE has exceptional protocol activity and unusually clear token value accrual, but its FDV, contributor concentration, derivatives exposure, and unlock schedule make it a high-risk asset.

  • Base-case range: $58–$76
  • Bullish scenario: $77–$90
  • Bearish scenario: $42–$55

7. Ondo

Ondo (ONDO) is associated with an ecosystem that brings tokenized Treasuries, stocks, ETFs, and other traditional financial products on-chain. It provides exposure to the growth of real-world asset infrastructure, but the relationship between product adoption and ONDO token value remains indirect.

Read more: Best Altcoins Under $1: Top Picks for High Growth

Why We Picked It for August

Ondo has credible product adoption. Its ecosystem offers tokenized US securities to eligible non-US users, while tracked TVL remains around $2.5 billion. Continued 24/7 minting and redemption, tokenized-stock expansion, and new distribution integrations could keep the project visible in August.

Product adoption does not currently give ONDO holders a verified claim on protocol revenue, and no confirmed August money-market-fund launch has been announced. The August case therefore depends on continued product expansion and new distribution integrations rather than a dated token catalyst.

Tokenomics are the main limitation. Around 4.9 billion of ONDO’s maximum supply of 10 billion tokens is circulating, and its fully diluted valuation remains about twice its circulating market capitalization. No major August cliff is listed, but long-term dilution remains significant.

Technical Analysis

ONDO is trading near $0.35 after extending its recovery, although it remains far below its historical highs.

  • Support zones: $0.34 and $0.32
  • Resistance zones: $0.37 and $0.40
  • Bullish confirmation: A sustained move above $0.37 supported by product growth and stronger volume
  • Thesis risk: A close below $0.30

Predicted Price for August

ONDO offers exposure to asset tokenization, but securities regulation, geographic restrictions, centralized custody, dilution, and weak direct value accrual justify a smaller risk allocation.

  • Base-case range: $0.32–$0.40
  • Bullish scenario: $0.40–$0.50
  • Bearish scenario: $0.24–$0.30

Learn more in our ONDO price prediction.

8. Bittensor

Bittensor (TAO) is a decentralized machine-intelligence network that uses specialized subnets and token incentives to reward miners and validators for AI- and data-related services. It offers direct exposure to the crypto-AI narrative, but its adoption is harder to measure independently than DeFi TVL, lending demand, or exchange revenue.

Read more: Best AI Crypto to Buy Right Now

Why We Picked It for August

Bittensor’s fixed 21-million maximum supply and subnet model create a distinctive thesis. The network’s documentation explains how emissions are allocated among subnets, miners, validators, and owners, allowing competing AI services to receive token incentives.

Approximately 9.6 million TAO is circulating. With no confirmed August partnerships or dated protocol launch, the month’s thesis rests on AI-sector momentum, subnet adoption, and possible ecosystem announcements.

Less than half of maximum supply is circulating, so continuing emissions could dilute unstaked holders.

Technical Analysis

TAO is trading near $194 after a strong monthly advance. Its relatively thin liquidity and narrative sensitivity can produce large gaps in both directions.

  • Support zones: $193 and $180
  • Resistance zones: $205 and $220–$230
  • Bullish confirmation: A sustained move above $230 with measurable subnet demand
  • Thesis risk: A close below $180

Predicted Price for August

TAO may offer asymmetric upside when AI assets are in demand, but it has the weakest independently measurable adoption and the greatest concentration and execution uncertainty in this shortlist.

  • Base-case range: $180–$230
  • Bullish scenario: $240–$290
  • Bearish scenario: $135–$170

Learn more in our TAO price prediction.

Final Thoughts

Bitcoin and Ethereum remain the strongest core candidates, while AAVE, LINK, and SOL offer more targeted growth exposure. HYPE, ONDO, and TAO carry greater upside narratives but also much higher dilution, concentration, regulatory, or execution risk.

Most importantly, keep position sizes aligned with what you can afford to lose, update all market levels before acting, and avoid treating scenario ranges as guarantees.
