Play to Earn Games to Watch in January

A new month and a new year. And though many studios slowed down development during the holidays, expect things to ramp up as we move through January. Here are a few games that we plan to watch during the month of January 2024!

With Christmas and New Year’s Even behind us, it’s time to get back to it! Though it’s not uncommon for new updates to be a little slow at the start of the year as teams trickle back into work and continue development, there will still be some notable activity. And making a big splash to start the year could prove very beneficial to a game’s hype factor. Below are a couple of games we’ll be keeping an eye on this month!

Illuvium

Illuvium recently opened up the PvP side of their Illuvium Arena game. And even more recently, announced plans to soon let players in Illuvium Zero mint the first blueprint NFTs! With the three-pronged gameplay starting to come together, Illuvium may regain much of the hype that they seem to have lost over the past couple of years.

You need to own a land plot to play Illuvium Zero, but both Illuvium Overworld and Illuvium Arena are free to play.

Immutable X

Immutable X onboarded over 30 new games to their platform in the month of December. And with the implementation of their Immutable Passport ramping up as well, Immutable X is securing themselves a long-term spot in the world of web3 gaming.

Immutable X is pushing hard to make bringing in new players an easier task. The Immutable Passport was one step. The next one is the announcement a couple of weeks ago of a feature allowing developers to sponsor the gas fees for their players, creating a seamless game experience, that completely hides the blockchain aspects. With the general animosity towards blockchain from many gamers, this could be turn into a big deal.

Treeverse

Treeverse has been quietly building for the past couple of years. And somehow, despite any major playtests or releases, kept enough interest for their original NFTrees collection to still fetch over 7 ETH apiece!

Endless Clouds, the studio behind Treeverse, does release regular updates showcasing concept artwork and providing info on the current development progress. In addition, they have also been building a PvP-focused side game (completely unrelated to Treeverse) called Capsule Heroes.

But, for those who have been waiting to play either game, Endless Clouds announced plans to release developer builds to a limited audience for both Treevers and Capsule Heroes in January! You can read this Twitter post for info on how to apply.

Axie Infinity

Surprising many, Axie Infinity refuses to go quietly into the night! This grandparent of web3 gaming has gone through a few revamps over the years. But now they seem to have settled into a solid base for their Axie battling game, and they continue to add new features such as Parts Evolution that help stimulate their players, and function as an important part of the economy. Aside from that, the Axie ecosystem also includes Project T, a social MMO experience, and Axie Homeland, their land gameplay.
