A decentralized wireless network crypto project on the Solana (SOL) layer-1 blockchain is aiming to transform the telecom industry with the launch of a new mobile phone plan.
In a statement, Helium Mobile says it has just rolled out a phone plan, which will be initially available exclusively to Miami residents.
“We’re launching in a single city to continue to scale our unique coverage model that combines our partner’s nationwide 5G network with the people-built, open-source Helium Mobile Network.”
The mobile carrier says the plan is being offered at a fraction of the cost offered by other telecom firms, citing an estimate from the comparison shopping engine WhistleOut, which indicates the average phone plan in the US costs about $114 per month.
“$5 per month (+ taxes and fees) gets you unlimited talk, text, and data. For some of you, that’s up to 95% less than what you’re paying now.”
Helium says it is capable of reducing costs because it is powered by individuals who can earn MOBILE tokens for sharing data rather than by corporations. The carrier also teamed up with telecom giant T-Mobile to give subscribers access to the nation’s largest 5G network.
“This two-sided approach remedies inefficiencies caused by the middlemen in the traditional telco model and lowers the overhead infrastructure costs for the carrier.”
