This $1200 Baseball Cap Will Help Protect Your Data?

TL;DR

  • Disco is selling a $1200 baseball cap, in order to drive adoption of its Web3 data storage technology. Which sounds stupid at first glance, but might actually be genius in practice?

  • Here’s the problem: onboarding into the Disco ecosystem is confusing as hell.

  • But Disco recognizes that people are more likely to grind something out if there’s money or status at the end of it.

  • So the company has started selling branded baseball caps ($1200) and t-shirts ($2400) on its website, but will give them away for free to users of its tech.

  • Is an overpriced baseball cap or tee enough incentive for folks to take initiative? No idea! But we love the creative thinking being displayed here.

Full Story

This is the story of how Disco is selling a $1200 baseball cap, in order to drive adoption of its Web3 data storage technology.

Which sounds stupid at first glance, but might actually be genius in practice?

Here’s Disco’s problem:

The company wants users to own their personal data, not tech companies.

In order for folks to take custody of their personal data via Disco, they need to create their own ‘data backpack’ through Discord, add ‘credentials’ to said backpack, and share those credential with friends.

If you’re like us, you just yelled “WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN!?” at your computer screen (scaring everyone around you at the office).

And even though we’re spooked by how much data the likes of Facebook, TikTok, and Google have on us…

We still can’t be bothered to take the time to answer our own question.

…and this apathy isn’t lost on the folks at Disco.

So here’s their solution:

Disco recognizes that people are more likely to grind something out if there’s money or status at the end of it.

So the company has started selling branded baseball caps ($1200) and t-shirts ($2400) on its website.

But here’s the twist…

They’ll give them away for free to anyone who has taken it upon themselves to grind it out and onboard into the Disco ecosystem.

Is an overpriced baseball cap or tee enough incentive for folks to take initiative? No idea!

But we love the creative thinking being displayed here.
