MetaMask to introduce new protocol ‘Snaps’, allowing wallet customization

Metamask is now customizable

MetaMask, a crypto asset (virtual currency) wallet, announced on the 22nd that it plans to introduce a new protocol “Snaps” at the end of 2023.

MetaMask is a self-managed wallet that can manage, send, and exchange digital tokens and is also used as a login method for decentralized applications (dApps). It can be used as an extension to browsers such as Chrome or downloaded to mobile devices as an app.

MetaMask primarily supports Ethereum and other EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) compatible chains such as Avalanche and Polygon, as well as L2 networks like Arbitrum and Optimism. However, it does not support non-EVM chains such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Solana (SOL).

With the introduction of a new protocol, Snaps, MetaMask users will be able to customize their wallets more individually and add new features. For example, it allows adding features such as support for non-EVM chains like Bitcoin and Solana, “cron jobs” that automate recurring tasks, and access to external APIs and web services.

Metamask is a hot wallet that can be accessed while the device is connected to the internet, so touching a vulnerable smart contract increases the risk of hacking. However, with the introduction of Snaps, it will be possible to warn of malicious code and display a notification such as “This contract will transfer all your USDC” before the user approves the transaction.

The new protocol will be available free of charge and will provide users with a richer and more personalized wallet experience.

Support developer contributions

External developers can now prepare to develop and publish new features on MetaMask. MetaMask is offering developer grants and hackathons to support this effort.

In addition, it has a dedicated Twitter account for developer support and offers a canary version of MetaMask for developers to test their code.

In April, Metamask added a new function “Buy Crypto” to the asset management portal screen “Portfolio Dapp”. As a result, it became possible to easily purchase virtual currency with legal currency even in the browser version.
